Default Re: overclocking limits ? on an M2N32-SLI Deluxe - 06-08-2007, 08:55 AM

Hey ppl...

Just registered, so i could post here...

Basically, I have the same question as the thread starter.

I originally purchased a AM2 4200+, Abit K9n SLI, BFG 7600GT and 2GB's of OCZ Special Ops 667mhz ram (i think :-s or was it 533, heh) to go in a newly built system. However, after overclocking, running super PI, and then having it blue screen, or restart after 2 mins, i ripped out the k9n, and purchased a m2n32 sli deluxe to replace it with. Now, the stock speed of my processor being 2.2GHz, I can only overclock it to a max of 2.4GHz before it has problems, all settings in the bios are automatic, but considering, I've jumped from a 462 3200+ to a am2, I've not had much experience with all the new overclocking settings, HT timings, memory voltages, vcore, e.t.c.. so could someone give me some advice please?

my system info for ref:

am2 4200+ @ 2.4GHz
asus m2n32 sli deluxe
2gb of OCZ special ops (533mhz/or/667mhz, cant remember which one without goin into cpuz)
2x 500gb maxtor sata hdd's
bfg 7600gt pci-e graphics card
creatve xfi platinum sound card
A/C AM2 Freezer cooling
antec p180b case (with all usual case fan's from antec)

any more info required, please let me know.

thanks!

If the memory is special ops 533MHz you will be limited with what you can do with it.

I need a new sig

I'll find out later on when i get home, and post what i've got...

For the meantime, what would you recommend for overclocking? As i was even considering selling this 4200+, and getting the 6000+, but i'd rather overclock it, and not have to pay the extra :P

thanks!

btw: looking here, http://www.legitreviews.com/article/373/4/ i wish i could acheive those speeds!

Well your cooling should be right for a bit more than a 200MHz overclock so long as you have adequate air flow in your case - the heatsink can't cool the processor if the case is full of hot air so make sure some fans are blowing heat out from top of case and cold air in from bottom or across the middle.

The special ops you have should be good for up to 900MHz with plenty of volts. I think it's fine to run at 2.2v and still be in warranty. I'd try the timings at 5-5-5-15 and see if that helps your overclock if you run the memory above stock ratings.

So bump up the Vcore voltage to 1.45v 1st and the Vmem to 2.2 and see how far you can go. You shouldn't be worried about causing any damage to anything but check your CPU temps. If they are getting above 50 degrees at your maximum overclock while just idling you'll need some better cooling or you'll have to reduce the speed.

Once you have found a speed you can boot into windows with and everything looks stable you'll need to put some load on it to test for stability. I recommend Prime95 Orthos and run it for a few hours followed by some 3Dmark and gaming.

Thanks for the info! I was beginning to think no one would respond :S

I will try the different timings, and see how it goes. As i said before, i did try overclocking previously, however, I was using the Abit K9n SLI, and after several failed attemps, and blue screen's, i decided to go and get the better board, the asus, :-\

The airflow should be pretty decent i think, I have the Antec P180B case which is supposedly good for both performance, and silence. I have 2x fans on the back blowing out, 1 in the middle front (sucking in), 1x in the bottom front (sucking in), and 1x on the top (blowing out). The arctic cooling fan was bought so i could have the fan pushing the heat up towards the top fan, however, i couldnt locate the clips onto the socket correctly, so it pushes the heat from the cpu down into the middle airflow.

I will try the settings you mentioned, when i get home later and see what goes bang, and post my results......

thanks!

ok...

so i set my bios settings to those you specified, i even managed to get to 2.80ghz, but the system would only post "sometimes" and the temp was being reported at 40*c, so i think that was a lil screwed up. Anyways, i went back into the bios, made sure the voltages were set correctly, and adjusted the ram settings (check the pic below). Clocked it back down to 2.5ghz, and now im just running prime95 to test the stability of the system...so far so good....

Here's a screenshot of the settings as per cpuz, though for some reason its not showing the vcore as 1.45, but as the stock of 1.2v... any ideas? :-\

btw: my idle temp of cpu in bios was around 46-50*c, now im running prime95 its reporting as 49-54*c, is this pretty good?

very anoying when i use CPU-z or Core Temp my pc randomly turns off (mobo telling the PSU to just Turn off i think as i can turn it back on with no problems)

as i was going to post in here and still am

sold me 3800 X2 and got an 5600 X2 now at 3.1ghz was thinking of getting the 6000+ but whats the point as it can realy only do 3.2ghz any way and the 6000+ X2 uses Odd ram deviders so ram be out of wack (stick with 2ghz 2.4ghz or 2.8ghz CPUs)

back to an mini typhoon as well seems to handle the OC very well (water block cracked over did the screws when i fitted me new 5600+ :P )

looking at getting an water cooling for 8800 GTX and CPU
