Those of you who have followed the literature examining potential connections between violent video games and real-world violence know that the evidence for such a connection is pretty tenuous. Studies purporting to show such a connection appear on a regular basis, often alternating with other studies that suggest that the connection is illusory. If it's any consolation, researchers in the field find the contradictory results just as confusing as you do, and some have called for efforts to be focused on understanding the reasons underlying the confusion. A paper that's in press at Psychology, Crime & Law claims to have accomplished just that.
Electronic Arts announced that it has shipped The
Sims(TM) 2 Pets for mobile phones. Players young and old can now create adorable
canine companions and use their cell phones to love, train and play with them.
The arrival of The Sims 2 Pets for mobile extends the reach of the popular The
Sims franchise, which has sold more than 85 million units to date.
"The Sims 2 Pets for mobile is an ideal product for the mobile consumer,"
said Travis Boatman, vice president of worldwide studios for EA Mobile. "Simple
controls and an easy, pick-up-and-play game design will satisfy both the
experienced The Sims player just as much as the casual gamer picking up a mobile
game for the first time."
In The Sims 2 Pets, players will adopt a puppy, teach it tricks and give it
food and exercise and cleaning. A well-trained puppy will delight your Sim with
surprising and amusing antics, and a happier Sim will benefit from increased
earnings and improved status. A neglected puppy can shred papers, devour
houseplants, soil the carpet, and make your Sim's life miserable.
"With The Sims 2 Pets, we're delivering the 'awww' factor players experience
when you see a puppy and capturing the strong ties that exist between a pet and
his owner," added Boatman.

As the suspense continues to mount for the eagerly awaited next generation title, Crysis, a new screenshot is all we have to keep the direct x10 fever away.
We've put together a selection of the best Crysis movies and demos down in the community forums. We had hoped for announcement that the game would be going gold at the end of March but that seems unlikely. Still a new screenshot is a good indication that the ball is still rolling. Hopefully it won't be long now before we get a taste of the future of PC gaming.
During GDC Sony made an effort to answer questions directly from the gaming community, taking steps to put aside the problems of the past several months. Today, we have a chance to take another step in the right direction with the company. Phil Harrison, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, has been the face of the PlayStation 3 here in the United States since before the machine launched. He's agreed to answer questions from the Slashdot community about the PlayStation 3, the console since launch, and their recent announcements about LittleBigPlanet and Home. I've linked a trio of other interviews he's done recently below, to give you an idea of topics that he's already covered. I'm sure there are plenty of questions we might ask that have yet to be put forward in a public forum. So - feel free to ask away. One question per comment, please, and keep in mind that Mr. Harrison is here to answer questions about the PS3 and games only; any other Sony-related questions are outside the scope of this interview. The highest-rated comments will be passed on, and we'll post his answers as soon as we get them.
Sales of Nintendo's video game console, Wii, continue to out pace that of their larger rival Sony and it's PlayStation 3 (PS3).
Last month, the Wii was outselling the PS3 by a 2-to-1 ratio, yet new data from tech tracking company Media Create finds the Wii has extended its lead to 4-to-1. Both countries are based in Japan, and dominance in the Japanese video game market has long been seen as a badge of pride within the gaming community.
In the last week of January, the Wii sold 83,754 consoles against the PS3's sales of a mere 19,996 units. Nindento's portable game console, the DS Lite beat both units, selling 194,526; Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP) sold more units than the PS3, at 35,700 consoles, but remains far behind Nintendo's contender.
According to GameSpot UK, the release of the figures has renewed rumors that the PS3 will soon be getting a price cut. Last week Sony senior vice president Takao Yuhara told the Associated Press that one of the back-to-profit options it would be considering would be a price cut, although no time frame was given.
