When it was first announced that Halo 3 Beta keys were being included in the retail release of an Xbox 360 game, I rolled my eyes. I assumed that whatever they were slapping that key onto was going to be a crappy bargain basement eyesore. It has been a great pleasure to learn that, maybe, they bundled the Halo 3 key with Crackdown so that more people would be exposed to the simple greatness this game contains. To be sure, the game has deep flaws; not much of a story, a few racial stereotypes, and somewhat unsatisfying boss fights marr the experience. At the core, though, this is a mindlessly fun game that does a lot of things right. If there's a sequel, and there's no reason not to think there won't be, it's good to know that Realtime Worlds has established an extremely solid base for future endeavors. Read on for my thoughts on this superjumping shooter.

Steve Nix (right), Director of Business Development for id Software, thinks the Wii is "fantastic." While the latest id tech could not really be made for Wii, Nix said that some id brands could be brought to the console, which would "look better than any other Wii game." We talk about that and a whole lot more in this exclusive D.I.C.E. interview.

Sierra Entertainment, a division of Vivendi
Games, announced today that the third iteration of the multi-million
unit selling real-time strategy (RTS) series, Empire Earth is in
development on PC.
Empire Earth is the only RTS series that allows players to build and
rule an empire from the ancient world to the distant future, battling
it out across the globe through the eons in a bid for worldwide
control. Unlike other RTS games that take away the spoils of victory,
Empire Earth III will offer continuous free-form gameplay that will
allow players to keep units from one battle to the next.
The Empire Earth series has been the recipient
of much deserved praise from the media and fans alike, making it a
multi-million unit selling franchise for Sierra Entertainment. Empire Earth III will take the series to the next level with its
ability to capture the entire scope of the globe and give it to the
hands of the player. Developed by Mad Doc Software, Empire Earth III will be out in Fall 2007. |

PC Gamer had planned a preview of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars but it was missing from the April issue due to a printing error. Thankfully the internet is not as fussy and copies of the article can be found around the net.
Check out the PC Gamer Enemy Territory preview in pdf format.
This game looks amazing and is currently in beta testing mode behind closed doors. Expect a release in the middle of 2007. |

An article on PSU points to a possible buy out of 2K Sports, a subsidary of Take-Two Interactive by Electronic Arts. According to the article, Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter suggested the take over after downgrading Take-Two Interactive's stock from "Buy" to "Sell".
“It is clear to us that Take-TwoÙs sports business would have
tremendous value to EA, as it would give EA a monopoly on football,
basketball, baseball,
and hockey,” Pachter said. "It is arguable that EA would benefit by as much as $1 billion if it
were to obtain an exclusive; this does not mean that it is willing to
pay $1 billion.”
"We think that Take-TwoÙs flagship franchise, Grand Theft Auto, will
continue to generate significant profits but are less optimistic about
the profit potential from its sports business and from 'everything
else,'" Pachter wrote.
Given the sale is inevitable, its highly unlikely to see any publisher compete with EA since they have established a huge presence in the market and are the leading publisher of sports titles like FIFA and Cricket. This purchase gives EA a monopoly in this segment. It is estimated that Electronic Arts might
purchase 2K for around $200 million dollars. |
