CellFactor Combat Training Preview

cellfactor

If you haven't heard of CellFactor, chances are you soon will. This game has enough "next-gen" to make your eyes pop. With support for the Ageia PhysX card right out of the box, this game is set to be one of the first games to demonstrate the power of the new technology. Can it compete with the likes of Valve, Epic and id software?

Once every so often a game comes along that takes your breath away, then once every 10 years a game comes along that echos in the legitimate advancement of combined technologies. Enter CellFactor.

CellFactor is based around utilising Ageias PhysX PPU, but thats not the only thing that makes it stand out. The instant you look at CellFactor you will know this game could well be something very special, much like STALKER. At present there appears to be no intention of a single player campaign, though this might change as development progresses.

CellFactor centers around eye-popping graphics, incredible immersive environments, and of course physics. Physics are used in almost endless magnitudes in CellFactor. These include being able to use phycokenesis abilities in tandem with gunplay, for example shooting someone while hurling an object from the environment at them all at once. Explosions are also realistically unpredictable, making you aware of the fact that incoming debris or shrapnel is equally as deadly as the explosion itself.

The game engine behind CellFactor is called the Reality Engine. It is a middleware engine, and doesn't require the latest top end equipment to just scrape by at 35FPS. The engine itself is highly efficient and capable, managing to pull off some quite impressive eyecandy including;

* Pixel Shaded Environments
* Dynamic Soft Shadows
* HDR Rendering
* Post-Process Effects
* Motion Blur

Amidst all that eyecandy its quite easy to forget just what the engine is
particularly good at; drawing thousands of objects efficiently using Shader Instancing. This allows the engine to draw fully modelled particle debris without crippling the VGPU.

MaXits final word is to watch this game very closely, visit cellfactorgame.com, drool over the spectacular detail in the screenshots and download the 400MB Real-Time Bink video file. Its well worth the download time, and seeing what this engine can do in the video is truely spectacular. From what I have seen, it also has the capability to blow the Crysis engine out of the water, now THATS impressive!
