Bringing an Asian
pay model to the western world, NCsoft is set to introduce a few free
online games. But exactly what does their version of free entail?
NCSoft is the company that has produced
such MMORPGs as City of Heroes and the Lineage series. Now, they
have an idea that might be great in the western markets - or it
might fail miserably.
Four games were announced at E3 under
this model - however only two were actually playable. These were
Exteel, a mech type pvp game, and Dungeon runner, the typical fantasy
jaunt.

So how does the pay model for these
games work? No box price, no subscription price, but additions to
the game would be acquired through
micropayments. This could be for new dungeons, characters, items,
gold - it's really up in the air at this point, and not something
typically seen outside of the Asian market.
If NCSoft is successful in this type of payment structure, it could
allow for a large number of innovations in the mmorpg game market on
this side of the sea.
There are also two sports themed mmo's
under this model planned, although there is not too much out about
them yet besides the names - Soccer Fury and Smash Star (tennis).
