Even before Verizon Wireless started offering the Motorola Q in the US several months ago, we have been trying to find out GSM version of the phone would be available.
Well, it appears Motorola plans to finally introduce a GSM version of the tablet-style Windows Smartphone with a QWERTY thumb-keyboard, at the 3GSM show in Barcelona next week. Motorola President Mobile Devices Business Ron Garriques confirmed as much during the company's recent financial webcast.
It appears there are two GSM editions of the Q in the pipeline: the Motorola Q EDGE and the 3G capable Q2 (Q Squared).
The Motorola Q EDGE will be a GSM device with, obviously, support for the 2.5G networking standard EDGE. Based on the picture of the device Motorola has released, it appears that this upcoming model will be essentially physically identical to its predecessor.
The Q2 is expected to be a much more significantly changed from the current one. Motorola has said there will be be both GSM and CDMA versions of this smartphone, and these will support HSDPA or EV-DO, respectively.
Its not known which version of Microsoft Windows Mobile these phones run on (given Microsoft is releasing the new version of its Mobile OS codenamed Crossbow sometime this year).
