Capture The Flag and Cell Phones

Recently, Denver had a Capture The Flag event spanning most of the 16th Street Mall. It was an amazingly good fun awesome time and all that stuff. But I write to complain, and to complain about one particular thing:

Cell phones.

cellphones

Cell phones as organizational and strategic technology.

Let's say you set up an organized phone tree. Defensive and offensive captains report to the team captain; flag defense and jail defense and border defense captains report to the defensive captain; flag defending schmuck reports to flag defense captains. OK. Now let's say someone steals your flag. (I'm told it happens; my team won, so I wouldn't know. Neener.) By the time your frantic message goes up the phone tree and down again to the correct branch, the thief has made it back to his own territory and that's all she wrote.

I think maybe walkie-talkies might have been better.

On the other hand, using the phone tree when the game is over sure beats having team members wandering around wondering where everyone went when in fact everyone went to Dixon's for a beer. So the things have some use, I suppose.
