The power consumption reports have come in, and it's not looking so good for Sony. The PS3 has a rated power consumption of about 380W. As a few points of comparison, the Xbox 360 takes less than half that, at 160W, and the PS2 took only 45W. What's funny is that the Wii comes in at about the same power consumption as the GameCube did, at right around 20W.
380W of power usage translates to an increase of $40 in your electric bill for a year of playing two hours a day. Now, in all seriousness, if you're paying $500 or $600 for a console, does it really matter? Nevertheless, Nintendo is using these numbers to their advantage, pointing out that "with a smaller chip and minimized power consumption, Wii can be left on 24 hours a day." That's all fine, but I wouldn't recommend buying a Wii and playing it 24 hours a day.
