In yet another move to try and take Apple down a notch, retail store Best Buy, portable media player manufacturer SanDisk, and software developer Real Networks have teamed up to provide a new digital music service, which will give you one more alternative place to buy your digital music, in case all the other ones were getting old.
Prices are pretty much standard. To buy a track will cost you 99 cents, and a one-month subscription will cost you $14.99. The monthly subscription lets you play all the music you want, as well as transfer the music to your PC or MP3 player (of course, you can only play this music as long as you're a subscriber).
The combined effort is designed to promote SanDisk's Sansa e200R line of MP3 players, as well as Real's Rhapsody software. The Best Buy Digital Music Store is set to launch on October 15, and will feature an exclusive Diddy track as one of its promotions.

Everyone's been selling draft-n wireless devices these days. Since the 802.11n standard is taking so long to become final, and companies are always looking for ways to pick up some extra cash, they started selling "draft-n" devices based on rough drafts of the final standard (hence the name). As with any other device that's released before the standard is set, you have absolutely no idea whether or not your devices just need a firmware upgrade or if you have to replace them when the final standard comes out.
ASUS is the first company to offer you a guarantee of compatibility with the finalized 802.11n standard when you purchase one of their devices. Any draft-n device purchased by the end of this year is guaranteed to work with the 802.11n spec, whether through a firmware update or a complete upgrade of hardware. All you have to do is claim your working 802.11n device within 3 months of the ratification of the standard...if it ever gets ratified, that is.

Creative Labs has released a new product which claims to improve the playback quality of MP3 audio. Called the Xmod, the device is based on their X-Fi technology and can up-convert a 16-bit audio file to 24-bit, enhance low and high frequencies, and in general improve the quality of the audio you listen to. In fact, the claim is that it can enhance the audio to the point where it's better than the original CD quality it started from.
The X-Fi technology that the Xmod is based on effectively reverses the negative effects of compressing audio. When audio is compressed, it loses several things that you don't notice unless you really care, like the range of sounds produced or the spacing between different frequencies. Every 3dB rise in the audio is also converted to 1dB, and the Xmod claims to find these spots and bring it back up again. It will also produce surround sound from a stereo source, even if you have stereo speakers.
The Xmod connects between your audio source and your speakers, so there's no drivers or software that needs to be installed. It's currently available and selling for around $80.

Sony's pushing the Blu-ray standard as much as they can, and now they've announced two new set-top Blu-ray recorders. The BDZ-V7 and BDZ-V9 sport an internal hard drive in addition to the Blu-ray burner, so you can record shows (or other inputs) to the hard drive and then later transferring to a disc.
The difference between the two models is hard drive size: the BDZ-V7 has a 250GB hard drive, and the BDZ-V9 holds 500GB of video. Both can record two programs at the same time, and both support full 1080p video, but neither of them will work with dual-layer BD-R discs. Maybe next time...
Japan will see these two drives on December 8, at prices of about $2,120 and $2,550 for the V7 and V9 models, respectively.

SatNav is one of the greatest gadgets to ever come along. Even women have no excuse for getting lost on their way to Tescos now. If you're fedup with the usual popup dash or screen mounted affairs, this new navigation device might be right up your street. Sorry that was awful I know!
It replaces your rear view mirror and boasts a 4 inch screen in the left hand side that directs you to your destination. It comes with an integrated speaker for audible instructions and contains 8.5GB of European maps.
Not quite sure how this thing will work as looking in the rear view mirror means taking your eyes off the road? Still, now the chicks can have a valid excuse for looking in the mirror while driving. Oh dear.
