| Creative Xmod Enhances MP3s |
| Thursday, 05 October 2006 01:16 |
Creative Labs has released a new product which claims to improve the playback quality of MP3 audio. Called the Xmod, the device is based on their X-Fi technology and can up-convert a 16-bit audio file to 24-bit, enhance low and high frequencies, and in general improve the quality of the audio you listen to. In fact, the claim is that it can enhance the audio to the point where it's better than the original CD quality it started from. The X-Fi technology that the Xmod is based on effectively reverses the negative effects of compressing audio. When audio is compressed, it loses several things that you don't notice unless you really care, like the range of sounds produced or the spacing between different frequencies. Every 3dB rise in the audio is also converted to 1dB, and the Xmod claims to find these spots and bring it back up again. It will also produce surround sound from a stereo source, even if you have stereo speakers. The Xmod connects between your audio source and your speakers, so there's no drivers or software that needs to be installed. It's currently available and selling for around $80.
