Freeline Skates: Teeny Tiny So Cool Transportation
Tuesday, 06 June 2006 00:00
OK, so, these are cool:

Freeline Skates

"Dual independent skate connected by the body of the rider with a sideways stance.

"The Freeline Skates TM are ridden skateboard/snowboard-like.

"Riders can achieve high levels of traction and carve smooth 'S' turns while riding downhill and dance like a fish on the flats and uphill.

"The Freeline Skates TM are extremely portable making them the smallest and lightest form of transportation."

So sayeth the Freeline Skates website. But do they work?
Freeline Skates in actionDo they really work? Can you, in fact, skate sideways? Is the traction sufficient that you don't just fall off those teeny tiny platforms?

In fact, yes. This reporter was alerted to their existence by the sight of a teenager gliding along the northern end of 19th Street in Boulder, Colorado, USA on the afternoon of Saturday, June 3. Said teen kept up his momentum by moving his feet forward and back, perpendicular to the vector of travel, alternating feet like someone using one of those ski-style glider fitness machines.

As for not falling off, well, 19th Street hits a steep downhill shortly ahead of where said teen was spotted. By the absence of screams and ambulance sirens, we can assume he came to no injury as he rode his Freeline Skates on his way down towards Iris Street.
