Ice scrapping is a thing of the past thanks to a new film technology developed by
a Dartmouth College professor. Surfaces prone to icing up can be de-iced in a jiffy, great news for all the motorists out there.
A special film is applied to surfaces that a re prone to icing up and a jolt of electricity removes the ice in a matter of seconds. Many car manufacturers, including BMW and Mercedes are said to be watching this technology develop with keen interest. The technology could also bring economic savings to other areas of industry such as keeping ice of power lines or defrosting aeroplance windows. In Sweden, engineers have already decided to use the Pulse Electrothermal de-icing to coat the Uddevalla Bridge to stop any problems with ice. Refridgeration is also set to benefit with the PETD technology bringing economic savings to this huge market.
"Frost-free refrigerators can approximately reduce energy consumption by a factor of two. Billions of dollars are spent each year on running refrigerators and air conditioners. If you can cut that, it's great," Petrenko said. "In ice makers, we can cut the ice-harvesting cycle and increase the productivity of ice makers by 30 (percent) to 40 percent."
