We've all been anxiously waiting for more details on the Zune. How big is it, compared to the iPod or other portable players? What video and audio formats does it support? But one thing we've taken for granted is wireless capability. When we heard that Zune had WiFi capabilities, we assumed that meant you could synchronize files with your PC, share music with other Zune players, and maybe even access the Internet. Turns out we were asking for too much, at least at launch.
David Caulton, a Zune employee, detailed the wireless capabilities of the Zune. You can find other Zune players around you, but you don't have unlimited access to their files. Images can be sent back and forth, but songs can only be sent as a "trial" version, which is deleted (at the next sync) once you've played it three times or had it for three days. The WiFi gives you no Internet connectivity, and you can't sync your Zune to your PC over the WiFi. Downloading from the Zune Marketplace directly to your Zune is also not supported. Looks like we're not getting much, are we?
