OCZ recently launched the ProXStream 1000W PSU, a behemoth of a PSU to juice the monsta quad core SLI rigs of today. So do you really need 1kw of power flowing through your desktop? If you are a high end user with a couple of the latest NVIDIA cards in SLI and a quad core processor, the answer is yes. Okay you'd probably get away with a 750w PSU but it would be working much harder than one with a few hundred watts in reserve and might even leave you tracking system instability into the long hours. If you plan on adding a couple of thermochill rads, a ton of fans and some terabyte drives, you'll defintely want to up the juice stakes. The OCZ ProXStream combines 1000w of power with excellent build quality and is touted as the perfect solution for Multi-GPU ready systems for the most demanding of PC enthusiasts, high end system builders and elite gamers. Using Rubycon capacitors and a clever compact design that allows maximum  power in a standard size casing, this power supply makes the competition look fat by comparison.

Packaging

The ProXStream PSU comes in the usual PSU cardboard box offering which is strong enough to protect the contents during shipping. The front of the box has the image of the PSU along with some features and specifications. Turning the box around reveals more detailed information. It's attractive and shows the units unique size and specs.

The power supply is protected by a bubble wrap bag and all the cables are neatly bundled beside the unit along with the power cord, screws used to install the PSU and the user manual.

Features

Two things really caught our attention after taking the wraps off the ProXStream. The size (you really can't believe it's a 1kw PSU) and the sweet mirror finish. The compact size opens a a whole range of possibilities in case choice for the high end system builder - you won't need a LianLi TJ07 just to house your 1KW PSU anymore!

The rear of the power supply has the 80mm ball bearing fan and the power cord connector. The power ON/OFF switch, which is most common on almost all PSUs, is surprisingly missing on the PXS. The other side of the PSU has a mesh to allow for more cooling and all the cables come out from this side. It's not modular, so if you're a cable tidier you'll probably grumble here. To be fair, OCZ have already done a great job of cable tidying with red and black sleeving that looks cool. It's just as easy to fold away the unused cables with a tie wrap and we didn't have any problems here.

All cables are sleeved, the four PCI-E cables in red, and all other cables in black. The following connectors are provided:
