As though we weren't already champing at the bit to see Winona Ryder's lovely animated self in A Scanner Darkly (US release date July 7; UK release date Aug 18), the hot fresh news coming down the pike is that Ryder has signed on for the femme fatal role in Daniel Waters' new indie film Sex And Death 101. It's slated for release in 2007.
Why 101? That's how many names are in the mysterious email the main character (Simon Baker) receives, telling him every woman he's ever had sex with or ever will. As for Sex and Death, that's where Ryder's character comes in: a self-appointed vigilante out to get any man in her path who's ever committed a crime against a woman. And by "crime" she doesn't just mean petty theft and burglary. And she thinks Baker's character is guilty as they come. This isn't Ryder's first time acting for Waters. He's the director behind Heathers, the film that arguably launched Ryder's career. "Arguably," because others might argue it was Tim Burton and Beetlejuice that made her a household name the following year. In any case, the match-up of Ryder and Waters promises good things for this new project.
But with 2007 still so far away, it's a good thing we have A Scanner Darkly to look forward to next month.
