Gretag MacBeth Eye One Calibration (continued)
Choose the required monitor to match your device.
Choose the required calibration settings for your monitor.
A white point of 6500K (sRGB) and Gamma of 2.2 is an ideal setting for most PC user's. At this point, the software prompts you to attach the colorimeter, preferably to the center of the display - the monitors sweet spot. After adjusting the contrast and brightness to the correct values determined by the colorimeter, it's most important part - setting white point / colour temperature of the monitor. This is achieved by adjusting the individual RGB output channels of the monitor until the three arrows - representing R G B - are centrally aligned with each other. If your monitor does not allow for individual RGB output adjustment you'll need to select 'RGB Presets' and allow the Eye One software to determine what the white point is. Most modern monitors come with individual RGB controls as standard - if yours doesn't or if your monitor is older than three years, it might be time to upgrade! The Sony F520 comes with dual RGB gun controls - one for brightness and one for contrast.
Careful small adjustments were required to achieve an accurate calibration from the Sony F520 and the artisan tube. While the Sony allows for very accurate colour calibration it can be very tricky and time consuming trying to align the dual RGB arrows in the Eye One software - six settings to tweak instead of the usual three. The AOC TFT, with single RGB output controls proved much easier to setup by comparison. The final step is to save the profile and check the advanced colour management settings under display properties to make sure the new profile is active.
The Eye One display provides a solid foundation to the world of colour management. The whole system is a doddle to use even for complete novices but don't let the simplicity fool you. This is powerful technology providing very accurate ICC monitor profiles, once only possible with equipment costing thousands of pounds. After calibrating the Sony monitor to a white point of 6500K the colours looked much more natural and the text appeared sharper and clearly defined. |
