So do you really need 1kw of power flowing through your desktop? If you are a high end user with a couple of the latest NVIDIA cards in SLI and a quad core processor, the answer is yes. Okay you'd probably get away with a 750w PSU but it would be working much harder than one with a few hundred watts in reserve and might even leave you tracking system instability into the long hours. If you plan on adding a couple of thermochill rads, a ton of fans and some terabyte drives, you'll defintely want to up the juice stakes. The OCZ ProXStream combines 1000w of power with excellent build quality and is touted as the perfect solution for Multi-GPU ready systems for the most demanding of PC enthusiasts, high end system builders and elite gamers. Using Rubycon capacitors and a clever compact design that allows maximum  power in a standard size casing, this power supply makes the competition look fat by comparison.

Packaging

The ProXStream PSU comes in the usual PSU cardboard box offering which is strong enough to protect the contents during shipping. The front of the box has the image of the PSU along with some features and specifications. Turning the box around reveals more detailed information. It's attractive and shows the units unique size and specs.

The power supply is protected by a bubble wrap bag and all the cables are neatly bundled beside the unit along with the power cord, screws used to install the PSU and the user manual.

Features

Two things really caught our attention after taking the wraps off the ProXStream. The size (you really can't believe it's a 1kw PSU) and the sweet mirror finish. The compact size opens a a whole range of possibilities in case choice for the high end system builder - you won't need a LianLi TJ07 just to house your 1KW PSU anymore!

The rear of the power supply has the 80mm ball bearing fan and the power cord connector. The power ON/OFF switch, which is most common on almost all PSUs, is surprisingly missing on the PXS. The other side of the PSU has a mesh to allow for more cooling and all the cables come out from this side. It's not modular, so if you're a cable tidier you'll probably grumble here. To be fair, OCZ have already done a great job of cable tidying with red and black sleeving that looks cool. It's just as easy to fold away the unused cables with a tie wrap and we didn't have any problems here.

All cables are sleeved, the four PCI-E cables in red, and all other cables in black. The following connectors are provided:

  • 4x PCI-E connectors
  • 20+4 pin ATX power cable
  • 4-pin & 8-pin CPU cables

In The Labs

Testing a 1000W power supply needs a really power hungry system. In truth this beast is targetted at the upper level of PC enthusiasts who want and demand the best for their rigs. At MaXit we have just the tool in our labs - the MaXit monsta. Some say it was forged in molten lava, that it breathes fire and can even scare old women. All we know is that it has a quad core processor, 8800GTX cards running at 650MHz and a ton of watercooling equipment. The ProXStream is not SLI Ready certified at the time of this writing but it shouldn't be a problem using this PSU in SLI rigs.

  • Intel Core 2 Quad Core Extreme Q6700 @ 3.33GHz
  • ASUS Striker Extreme Motherboard
  • 2x 1GB DDR2 RAM @ 1200MHz
  • 2x GeForce 8800GTX in SLI at 650MHz
  • Xtreme Soundcard
  • 3x 7200RPM HDDs
  • 1x 10000RPM HD
  • 1x ThermoChill PA120.3 Radiator
  • 1x ThermoChill PA120.2 Radiator
  • Laing DDC 3.2 Ultra with Plexitop
  • Seven 120mm Fans
  • Mcubed Fan Controller
  • Various lighting
Here's what this little lot looks like.

OCZ ProXStream 1KW PSU

Installing the ProXStream was hassle-free due to the compact size. Its small footprint really does make it a great PSU for small and medium sized cabinets.

First, rail stability. All the three rails were stable and showed very little fluctuation under heavy load. The fluctuation was no more than 0.05V at any moment during the 12 hour run.

The +12V rails can handle a 20A power draw each. The +3.3V rails and the +5V rails are capable of handling  power draws of 28A and 30A respectively. Even with this high end system pushing the Quad core CPU and NVIDIA cards to the max, the system remained perfectly stable no doubt thanks to the huge power reserve of the ProXStream.

Now onto noise performance. The PSU only has just a 80mm fan to cool all this power. And the little devil is noisy. If you are into quiet computing this thing will drive you bonkas. Even before we began load testing it was ramped up quiet high. I guess OCZ made a trade off between size and noise. Sure a 120mm fan would have been great but then you wouldn't be looking at such a small unit.

The Bottom Line

If you are out there looking for a PSU that is reliable and capable of powering your quad-core, multi-GPU rig, then the ProXStream 1000W PSU is the mutts nuts. The real bonus is the ultra compact size making it an ideal solution for small and medium size cases. In fact, if you need 1KW of power this is the only solution to consider. The build quality is impressive with high end parts throughout and backed up by a three year warranty from OCZ. The only niggle we had concerned the noise levels from the 80mm fan. If you have sensitive ear drums you might want to check it out in action first to see if you can live with it. Apart from that, the ProXStream is an innovative and kick ass product in the 1KW power supply market. We really can't wait to see what OCZ has up it's sleeve next!

The ProXStream is currently available online for around £170 (+VAT).
