Packaging

The GameXStream PSU comes in a serious looking dark blue box with lots of the all important information plastered all over. Inside the PSU is well protected in a bubble wrap cover to ensure it arrives in mint condition. Other stuff includes a power cable, a very well written user manual and the four screws for mounting it in your chassis. One thing that caught our attention was the velcro tie wrapped around the cables. There's nothing worse than a mass of cables springing all over when you take a PSU out of the box!

Features

The GameXStream is not a modular PSU but all the cables are sleeved. The PSU has a matt black finish which looks kinda ordinary after seeing the sleek mirrored finish of the ProXStream. The PSU is actively cooled by the top mounted 120mm fan which is covered by a black grill. The 2500RPM fan is lit by blue LEDs and it runs very silently.

The back of the unit has the usual power cord connector and the ON/OFF switch. The honeycomb mesh on the back also helps to passively cool the PSU. A sticker on the side lists the specs and details about the 12V Output Distribution List.

The GameXStream PSU has Active PFC which means there is no need for a voltage selector switch. The following is a list of the connectors:

  • 1x 20/4 pin ATX power connector
  • 1x 4 pin CPU power connectors
  • 2x 6 pin PCI-E power connectors
  • 2x 4 pin Molex connectors
  • 2x 4 pin floppy power connector
  • 6x SATA power connectors

In The Labs

Installing this PSU is pretty easy, nothing apart from the regular stuff you need to go through installing any PSU. The unit is very well sized and should be an easy fit in mid-sized cabinets as well.

We wanted to see what this 700W unit is really capable of - so we decided to throw it in the meanest power hungry beast we have in our lab. The following are the specs of the test system:

  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 @ 3.33GHz
  • ASUS Striker Extreme Motherboard
  • 2x 1GB DDR2 RAM @ 1200MHz
  • 2x GeForce 8800 Ultra in SLI
  • Xtreme Soundcard
  • 4x 7200RPM HDDs
  • Two Thermochill Radiators
  • Seven 120mm Fans
  • Mcubed Fan Controller
The GameXStream really lived up to its name and its performance really impressed me. All the three (+12V, +5V, and +3.3V) rails remained almost stable with a very little fluctuation under load which is pretty impressive.

The GXS is not behind in terms of efficiency either. The unit lived up to its advertised efficiency by delivering above 80% efficiency under all conditions. What this figure means is that with this PSU powering your rig, you can stop worrying about your next power bill burning a hole in your pocket!

One important aspect you should consider when shopping for a power supply is its sound, and believe me the GXS is really silent. I have some doubts initially about this unit being noisy, but once I finished testing it, I am happy that its less noisier than almost all PSUs we have tested so far.

The Bottom Line

The OCZ GameXStream is definitely one of the best PSUs we laid our hands on. High efficiency, superior stability, low noise levels, all in a compact size - what more could anyone ask for?!

The GXS 700W is currently retailing for around £80 (+VAT) and I would definitely recommend this power supply to anyone out there shopping for one.

Pros

  • High Efficiency
  • Excellent Stability
  • Low Noise
  • Small size

Cons

  • Not Modular

We would like to thank OCZ Technology  for giving us this opportunity to review the GameXStream PSU.
