Synology are experts in storage media solutions and have pioneered the way users manage their data. Over the years, the company has extended its key technologies in storage software and integrated them into cost efficient hardware components for consumers and business sectors. With a highly trained development team specialising in file systems, RAID and digital library technologies for content sharing, retrieving and searching, they know a thing or two about handling data! Their impressive product stable ranges from the Disk Station 101 series for SOHO and HOME users right up to the top of the range Cube Station CS-406 All-in-1 Terabyte server for demanding home users and small businesses.

The Cube Station CS-406 is a network attached storage (NAS) device that goes beyond file sharing and data backup with a unique and full feature list. Everything is networked these days and if you haven't experienced the benefits of NAS, a brief explanation might be in order. NAS is a storage system, usually including RAID configurations of hard drives for data security, with its own LAN IP address - rather than being attached to a computer. It allows the managing and mapping of file locations to any network attached devices, such as your PC. The beauty of NAS for Home Entertainment or business users is that it does away with the need of a central computer to manage everything. Imagine having a network repository for all your data that runs independantly of any computer. Then imagine a device that can host websites with PHP and MySQL support, download files, share photos, share files over the web, act as a multimedia server, backup data, connect USB devices and provide terabytes of storage space and you have a good idea of what the Cube Station 406 is all about.

Image

The official feature list reads as follows:

  • Windows ADS/NT4 Domain Support
  • Terabytes Storage Capacity
  • RAID 0,1 and 5 Support
  • User Quota Management
  • UOnP Multimedia Server
  • Photo Station With Album Control
  • Continuous Bit Torrent, FTP and HTTP Download Without PC
  • Web Server with PHP & MySQL Support
  • Secure FTP Server over SSL/TLS
  • Printer Server
  • File Server
  • Network Backup, Local Backup and PC Backup

Phew. It's like the Swiss Army knife of NAS Appliances.

The unit itself is stylish and well built. It's amazing so much has been packed in with dimensions of 230 x 168 x 184mm taking up a only small footprint - perfect for any desktop area. Synology have obviously spent a good deal of time creating an asthetically pleasing unit and it shines - it'll slot right in next to your Apple Mac and iPod setup. It might even make them jealous!

Image

A big power button on the front of the unit is a welcome addition and powering up is achieved by a single push. The unit takes a few moments to boot up the first time as it configures any attached hard drives for operation. The led's to the left and right provide clear visual indication to the system status. Once the blue light surrounding the power button stops flashing, you are good to go. The Cube Station has room for up to four SATA hard drives and two Terabytes of potential storage space - it supports 500GB hard drives. With RAID 0,1 and 5 on offer, data security is well catered for. For our tests, we installed two 400GB Western Digital hard drives and configured them to run in RAID 1 mode for absolute data safety. RAID 1 provides a mirror backup of any data - if one drive goes down you still have the other one in reserve. The downside is that instead of 800GB of space two drives would normally give, both drives are treated as one for a 400GB total. Performance users might want to opt for RAID 0 and the enhanced speed this mode offers for non-critical data applications or RAID 5 that offers a little of both. Synology has a list of recommended hard drives that have been tested and approved for use with the Cube Station - you can see the full list here. With support for all the latest drives, storage options are very impressive. Imagine four 500GB hard drives running in RAID 5. Brilliant stuff!

Let's take a look at some more pictures of the CS-406 in action - Flash player required to view larger images.

The Cube Station has account management built in and Windows domain support is compatible with Windows ADS and NT4 domains, making it ideal for any office environment where Windows domain colleagues need to share a server. Setting up the device is a five minute affair. Simply unscrew the back panel, slide the top panel off and connect up the hard drives. Instructions for assembly are under the lid showing you how to install the drives and all cables are included - some SATA are longer than others so a bit of care is needed in selecting the correct length based on the position of the hard drive. We would have liked to see the ability to hot swap hard drives with some some sort of caddy or slider system. Perhaps the R&D boffins over at Synology will think of a way to incorporate this in future technology. When everything is secure and connected up, you are basically ready to go. Press the power switch, wait for the blue light to stop flashing, check the LED's and pop the installation disk in your PC. A handy setup wizard walks you through the whole configuration process setting up the device on the network. Here's some examples of how you might configure and use the Cube Station.

Installation is a breeze, even the most technically challenged user would be able to have the Cube Station up and running in under ten minutes. Synology have obviously spent a lot of time making this aspect as pain free as possible - networking can be notoriously frustrating - and it shines as one of the easiest products to setup that we have had the pleasure of testing in the MaXit labs. Now the real fun begins.

Accessing the heart of the Cube Station is achieved through your normal web browser - in our case Mozilla Firefox. During installation your Cube Station will have been assigned a local IP address which you can tap into your browser to bring up the admin login screen - something like 192.168.1.2:5000. Don't panic if you've already forgotten the IP address as there is a handy Synology Assistant on the software CD that acts as a jump point to tweak, map drives, add printers, find attached NAS servers on your network and manage the CS-406 unit. Perfect for the Home user.

Image

Experienced users will probably just want to log straight in using their browser but the assistant is always there for support and additional configuration should you need it. The administration page allows you to access all the features of the Cube Station. Download, backup, photo station, web server, user management, ftp - it's all here in a familiar web browsing environment.

Features In Detail

With so much on offer, the Cube Station offers solutions for just about any aspect of data management, along with a host of other useful applications.

Photo Station

One of the top features on offer from the CS-406 has to be the Photo Station, offering a mix of public and private picture albums than can be accessed from a HTTP address. If you want to make them available over the internet, you'll need a static IP address too - most broadband connections for home users come with dynamic (means it changes everytime you connect) IP addresses so you might need to enquire about a static IP. Building a photo album is very simple. Enable the Photo Station from the admin console and it creates a folder on the Cube Station ready to receive pictures. To create an album is a simple case of dragging and dropping files on to the mapped drive. You can then type your address into your browser - ie: 192.168.1.2/photo - and the CS-406 indexs your files, create thumbnails and builds your gallery. You can keep pictures in folders but unfortunately subfolders are not supported at this time. Folders keep track of the amount of visitors who view each album - great fun for friends and family - and picture control including slideshows allows all sorts of viewing options. It really is a great tool and perfect for getting all your pictures up on the web without the need for complex html coding.

Download Redirector

Downloading files, mp3's and videos is a popular pastime for many surfers and the Cube Station introduces it's own dedicated download assistant to take the hassle out of the whole process. With support for Bit Torrent, FTP and HTTP downloading, you can use the Cube Station to download 24/7, freeing up your PC for other tasks. Once installed, you can drag files and torrents into the software window and leave the Cube Station to get on with the job. For Bit Torrent it's fantastic as it removes the need for Bit Torrent software on your PC. The download redirector is worth the price of admission alone as it automates one of the most basic and common tasks of computer users. Top Stuff!

Web Server with PHP & MySQL Support

If you are into creating websites, you are going to love the Web server feature that is built into the Cube Station CS-406. With full support for PHP and MySQL, you can create everything from simple .html pages to full blown wordpress blogs and Oscommerce shops. Basic web creation is as simple as dropping HTML pages into the mapped web directory. You could create your site in Dreamweaver and test it out using the Cube Station - even run a live website across the net if you had the spare bandwith. Great for home users and business websites who don't need a dedicated hosting solution. The real power comes for web designers. With support for PHP and MySQL as standard, complex websites can be built on the Cube Station, tested and shown to clients with ease. Installing applications such as phpmyadmin - a database manipulation tool - is as easy as downloading the open source package from the internet, unzipping and moving the contents onto a folder on the web directory mapped drive. Similar applications such as Oscommerce - one of the best free shopping cart systems available - can be setup and developed from the comfort of the Cube Station. We tested Joomla - a content management system - and Zencart - a posh Oscommerce shopping cart system - on the CS-406. Joomla worked perfectly out of the box but Zencart struggled possibly due to the use of XHTML based templates and pure CSS. Pages were not displayed correctly and no amount of tweaking could sort them out. Hopefully a future update will take care of this as the system matures.

Backup Solutions

Protecting data is serious business and the Cube Station offers three solutions to cover every eventually. Local backup allows data to be copied from the NAS server on to an external hard drive connected via the in built USB ports. Connect up the drive and the unit is detected by the Cube Station and configured ready for use. Fat 32, Native Formats and now NTFS thanks to a recent firmware upgrade. The external drive can either be shared or used for backup security. A schedule can be figured to run at set intervals or an immediate backup carried out. It's a bit basic but functional enough to get the job done. On a plus note, the higher performing USB 2.0 spec is supported by the Cube Station allowing faster file transfers.

Network backup allows the option to backup and restore data between two Cube Stations. There's no support for FTP backups so data syncing for web development isn't possible which is somewhat disappointing as the Web Server is so good. It really would have been the icing on the cake.

A software backup solution is included on the disk called Data Replicator II. Once installed it can perform immediate backups, synchronization and scheduled backups as required. Options are limited but it does perform all the basics and is very easy to configure and use. A 1.6GB test folder was backed up in around 12 minutes and restored in a similar amount of time. As with all software backup solutions you have to remember to start and run it. If you are the kind of user that can never remember daily chores like this, you'll probably groan at the thought of software solutions. For everybody else, it's a welcome addition.

Overall, we can't help feel a little underwhelmed by the backup solutions on offer. Perhaps the Photo Station and other features wowed us so much, we were expecting something with a little more X Factor. Incremental backups and data sync over FTP would be handy for webmasters and web developers. Automatic backups without the need to run software would be another. With the ability to run RAID 1 and 5, we expected Synology to throw in the works. Instead we have adequate solutions but there is plenty of room for additional improvements.

The Cube Station can also act as a multimedia server over uPnP. The ability to stream media files from the Cube Station will not doubt impress Home Entertainment enthusiasts with digital media adapters. Gamers with Xbox 360 consoles and the like will struggle without the use of third party software such as Twonky Vision installed on another PC. If Synology could crack the Xbox 360 and allow the easy streaming of files between the two systems they would have a real winner on their hands! We tried hooking up the Cube Station and our Xbox 360 over a home network but failed miserably. Synology are looking into this and hope to bring support for Windows Media Connect in the near future. If and when this happens, look out! The Cube Station will become a powerful multimedia server for just about any environment and the system to have for Home Entertainment.

In The Labs

Performance across networks will no doubt depend largely on your equipment and network environment. With support for Gigabit lans, the Cube Station is certainly no slouch. A 690Mb movie file downloaded from the Cube Station over FTP using FlashFXP to our PC was accomplished at around 26MB/s. Dragging a 1GB iso file from the Cube Station to a PC attached to the gigabit network took 2 minutes and ten seconds. We've pinched Synology's own test results showing a more detailed comparison in RAID 0 and 5 environments, to give you an idea of what to expect for the network experts out there.

In The Labs (continued)

Image

The final aspect of our Lab analysis looked at the noise the unit produced. With a big fan in the back you might think the Cube Station would be annoyingly loud but it is whisper quiet in use. The main noise comes from the hard drive units during read and write operations but even then the CS-406 seems to muffle out a lot of the whirs and clicks. If it didn't have a blue light and leds, you'd be hard pressed to tell that the unit was on. Top marks in the silence category!

The Bottom Line

The Synology Cube Station is a remarkable device offering so many features in such a small package. Terabyte server, multimedia server, web developer, picture gallery, file downloader, backup solution - it really is the king of NAS appliances. With RAID 0, 1 and 5 and support for up to four 500GB hard drives, it packs a real punch for Data storage and security. The system is a joy to use and might even show Apple a thing or two about user friendliness. With Synology's handy walk through wizards and software, even an inexperienced network user will be up and sharing files, backing up data, creating picture galleries and downloading files in a matter of minutes. The unit looks smart too, with clean lines and bags of style. Everything works from the front, so no fiddling round the back with on/off buttons. The CS-406 is controlled via a brilliant admin console that is accessed from any web browser installed on your computer. We loved the ability to set Bit Torrents downloading without the need for a PC and the Photo Station for creating picture galleries. These two features are worth the admission price alone!

It's worth mentioning that Synology constantly strive to improve their products through updates and customer feedback. Firmware upgrades with new features are released regularly through their excellent website. There's even a vibrant community forum for users to share tips and tweaks. When you are spending this amount of money, it's important to know there is a company ready to support consumers with excellent customer service. Synology earn a big thumbs up in this department.

So there we have it. The Cube Station CS-406 deserves super hero status as one of the most accomplished products in its class. Ideal for home and business networks. In fact anywhere data storage and sharing is required. If you're in the market for a great NAS appliance, the Cube Station should be you're number one choice.
